Success Stories of
the Directorate Sports and Youth Affairs
1. State Level
Youth Festival held in April.
Organised
by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs with the agenda to empower the
youth to tap their Potentials for success and responsible leadership for the
future, to increase their capacity building, to create awareness on different
aspects of life and for integration of minds of young people, besides fun,
frolic and amusements, the Youth Festival 2007 was an astounding success. The
youths were drawn from all the seven districts of the State and mixed together
in groups named after the rivers of the State; Umiam, Umtrew, Ganol, Simsang
etc. There were around 600 participants including the group leaders, youth
leaders and departmental Officials. The programmes contents ranges from
Aerobics, to fun games; discourses by learned Resource persons who were from
different professions on HIV/AIDS awareness. Natural Disasters and the need to
be in prepareness, Career Counseling, Leadership Training, entrepreneurship
training, survival strategies, Mass Media, Competitions on extempore, Singing,
Drama and fancy dress were a huge draw.
All
the programmes were injected life by the Camp
Coordinators; Sr Magdalene Synnah
and Fr. Anthony Kharkongor who did an excellent job as Animators. An analysis
of feedback from participants revealed that an overwhelming 75-80% opines that
Youth Fest is the best programme ever attended and wants such programmes
organized every year.
2. The programme for mental
alertness, awareness and informed Citizenship, and broadening of intellectual
horizons of young people, A Quiz Competition Called “Brain Box” was organized during April & May 2007. The
Competitions starts at the district level, where all the schools and Colleges
participates. There were 3 categories, Sub –Junior level upto Class VII, Junior
upto Class XII and Seniors from U.G.s to P.G.s The district level Competition
winners and Runners up were invited to the State Level Final Round
Competitions. The Final Round consists of 2 Rounds: Preliminary and the top 5
teams in each Category are qualified for the Final Q & A Round.
Surprisingly,
the So-So-Tham Auditorium was packed to capacity to listen to the Q & A
sessions of participants from the –Districts. The participants came really
prepared and Tura walked away Winners in 2 categories i.e. Sub-Juniors &
Junior, while Shillong retains the seniors.
The
concept of initiating young people into wide reading, being informed citizens,
and which becomes a tool for preparing them for Competitive exams and above all
to prepare the young people as a well developed, native and intelligent
citizens of the State has been fully realized, through this programmes. Another
programme in the offing in this line will be the State Wide Debate
Competitions.
3. Success at the National Games, Guwahati.
Meghalaya
teams are qualified to take part in 1) Athletics 2) Football 3) Karate 4)
Equestrian 5) Boxing 6) Judo 7) Archery.
The
teams are prepared by the respective State Associations under the banner of
Meghalaya State Olympic Associations. The Directorate of Sports and Youth
Affairs proactively pushes the MSOA/State Associations to prepare the teams and
all expenses borne by the Directorate of Sports.
Though
in of medals won, the quantity may be less, yet the spirit behind it and the
improvement it has over the previous edition cannot be denied. The State won
two bronze medals in Boxing at Hyderabad Games, whereas in Guwahati 3 bronze
and 1 silver medals were won.
Also
in Guwahati Games, particularly, Football, State team does exceedingly well;
the team defeated the giants in Indian Football, Punjab
and Bengal, The team ultimately reached the Semi-Final
and secures a bronze medal which is highly creditable, considering a stiff
better opponent teams.
1. North East Sports Festival 2007.
Meghalaya
Contingent under the banner of the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs
participated in the 21st North East Sports Festival held at Gangtok
w.e.f. 24th to 28th February 2007 in 1) Archery
2)Athletics 3) Boxing 4) Badminton 5) Karate 6) Table Tennis 7) Taekwondo 8)
Volleyball.
The
State team does extremely well securing 8 Gold, 8 Silver and 13 Bronze medals
in the tournament. For the first time, a gold medal was won in Athletics in the
event of Javeline and the State Team won a coveted gold in Football in this
Tournament, which indicates the upward swing of the game of football in the
State.
2. Achievements by State Associations through support from the
Directorate of Sports.
I. Athletics - 1) MAA participated in the East Zone National Athletics Championship at
Patna
from 21st – 23rd September 2007
and won 3 Bronze medals.
- 2) National North East Zone Athletics Championship at Imphal
in
October 2007 and won 1 Gold, 2
Silver and 7 Bronze
medals.
II. Basketball - State team of MBA achieves a creditable Runners up position in the North East Basketball
championship at Aizawl, during November 2007.
III. Boxing - 1) State team wins 2 Bronze medals at Junior (Men) National Boxing Championship held at Warrangal(AP)in October 2007.

2) Senior Women Boxers won 1 bronze medal at the Senior National Championship held at Rudrapur, Uttarakhand in
March 2007.

3) Mr.Torak Kharpran won a Silver medal in the 54th Senior National Boxing Championship held at
Delhi in August 2007.
IV. Wushu
1)
Wushu
State Association won 2 Silver and
2 Bronze medals at
the VINational Sub-Junior Wushu
Championship held at
Muzaffarpur.
2) Participated in VII National
Junior Wushu Championship at Chandigarh
and won 1 Bronze medal.
3) Participated in II N.E.Wushu
Championship at Itanagar and
won 3
Gold, 5 Silver and 2 Bronze medals.
4) Participated in VII National
Sub-Junior Championship at Himachal Pradesh and won 1 gold and 3 silver
medals.
V. Kick Boxing
1) MAKBA – Participated in the 1st
N.E. Kick Boxing Championship at Guwahati and won 4 Gold, 12 Silver
and 9 Bronze Medals.
2) Participated in the Indian Open
Kick Boxing Championship at Vishakapatnam
in September 2007 and won 2 Gold 3 Silver and
1 Bronze Medals
VI. Meghalaya Judo Association successfully hosted the National
Sub-Junior Championship for boys and girls at Shillong in the month of August
2007 fully supported by the Directorate of Sports and North Eastern Council.
VII. Shillong Sports
Association has successfully conducted the Shillong Games at J.N.S. Complex
during December 2007 in 8 disciplines i.e. 1) Athletics 2) Badminton 3) Archery
4) Table Tennis 5)Volleyball6)Basketball 7) Women football. Altogether 24 Clubs
of different localities of the City took part in the competition with full
funding by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs.
VIII. The Directorate of Sports has successfully conducted Rural
Sports Programme supported by Sports Authority of India in 7 Sports disciplines
in all the blocks of the State. 1) Athletics 2) Football 3) Volleyball 4)
Kabbadi 5) Kho-Kho 6) Tug of War 7) Archery.
It
is worth mentioning that Kabbadi and Kho-Kho, an Indian Indigenous game has
been introduced in the State for the first time in all the blocks. State team
under the banner of Directorate of Sports has been able to participate at the
All India Rural Sports Tournament in Kabbadi, Kho-Kho Archery, and Athletics in
Jaipur and Faridabad during
December 2007 and January 2008.
The
State team will also participate in the upcoming All India National School
Championship at Orissa, Women Sports Festival at Jammu
and Kashmir and of North East Sports Festival at
Guwahati during January and February 2008.
Participation
at the National Games, Jharkhand, is a priority on the agenda of the
Directorate of Sports and the State Olympic Association has been geared up to
prepare the qualified sports – disciplines and intensive ground work has
already begun. Intensive Coaching Programmes are planned from the mid of
January 2008.
IX. The Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs
does not confine itself to Sports programmes only. During the Independence Day
celebration 2007, the Directorate of Sports took upon itself along with the
Administration to line up programmes which are different from previous years to
draw people from different walks of life to participate freely despite the
boycott by some Organizations. The morning programmes were marked by the
Freedom lap, a cross country race of 7 kilometers from Fire Bridgade ground to
J.N.S. Complex, in which about 800 people, both old and young participated
freely. After the Official parade inspection, an exhibition football match of
the expert exponents from Meghalaya was pitted against the combine experts from
the rest of the North East. It was a unique experience for the public to see
the skillful display of the game of football.
After
the Football Match a Rock show from Local Bands as well as from the Region,
including Nagaland and Mizoram enthrall the public. The performances of these
Band groups are no less than the reputed band groups of the world. The Rock
Show is interspersed with cultural display from the whole of North East. The
Hmar dance, the Naga Sumi dance, the Pung Cholok and Pung Cholom dance of the
Manipuris, the Sword dance of the Khasis and the long rhythmic drums and the
sashaying of young Garo maidens indicating the dance of Wangala completely
mesmerizes the crowd till the evening. In the evening as the last programme, a
brass band display by the Police Force at Khyndai lad kept the people
spellbound. According to Official figures, not less than 30 thousand attended
the public function and celebrated the day enthusiastically.
The
Directorate of Sports receives a lot of accolades and a pat on the back for
lining up attracted programmes for the public which made it possible for a
large number of people to attend the function and the day’s programmes. In the
end, the Independence Day of the Country is celebrated in a fitting manner,
which most of the time were marked by thin attendance of crowd and public
participation.
